Web Development
VCFF + VIYFF
While working as a Web Developer for the Vancouver Chinese Film Festival, I learned the importance of being flexible with the skills I offer the team, and of taking feedback and criticism from supervisors and peers.
Role: Web Developer: rebuilt the site after a breach, added ZOHO email, automated submission/ticketing, and a bilingual EN/zh toggle.
- Recovered the festival website from a full breach that had wiped all files and domains.
- Cut ticket purchase and film submission from a manual process to self-serve online.

The Issues
During my experience at the VCFF, I learned firsthand how critical website security is for any organization. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival's website was compromised, resulting in the loss of all their files and web domains.
These issues were very problematic, as their website was their primary means of communication with their audience.

Security
The loss of their website resulted from a significant security breach that exposed vulnerabilities in the website's code and allowed unauthorized access to its servers. My first job was to assess all problematic issues and resolve them.

Security Improvements
After all security issues were addressed, the first addition I implemented was a working email system for the business team, one of the most crucial tools lacking after the breach. I chose ZOHO as the mailing provider to help maintain security, allowing employees to encrypt emails and accounts associated with the VCFF domain.

Functionality Overhaul
I created an automated online version of the film submission and ticketing system, a significant improvement over the previous manual process. Festival-goers can now easily purchase tickets online, and filmmakers can submit their films through the new system.

Revamped Interface
Many functionalities and interfaces were greatly improved, including a translation button allowing users to pick between English and Traditional Chinese. The revamped website featured a streamlined design promoting efficiency and accessibility, with festival information easily found in both languages.
The Experience
Working at the VCFF was impactful and engaging, giving me a glimpse of what the industry looks like. It showed me how to work in an environment heavily reliant on continuous teamwork and communication, and how to be flexible in my own role while supporting other departments when needed.
